Robert Burton Bush
Studio F-1

Robert Bush was born and raised in Palo Alto and attended Yale and UC Berkeley. A fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1975 allowed him to travel to Manila in The Philippines where he created a series of paintings for a solo exhibition at the Cultural Center of The Philippines.

Bush continued to paint and exhibit his work while also directing art centers in California and Hawaii. Travel has taken him to over 50 countries, returning to Palo Alto in 1998. Bush’s work today is seen in galleries in Hawaii and California.

Bush’s current work focuses on large scale works of mixed-media and oil on canvas. Using images of abstracted foliage, jungle environments and exotic flora, juxtaposed with indigenous iconography from other cultures and luminescent color, Bush strives to reflect a personal sense of the transcendent light that surrounds us.

Bush also produces one of a kind work on silk with fiber reactive dyes, discharge pastes and wax. Long pieces of fabric as well as limited edition scarves entitled “Elements” both reflect the brilliance of the natural world and the complexity of that which is hidden.
