The third space, the “in-between”, is the permanent position for displaced peoples to inhabit. Whether a forced migration or a voluntary one, the cultural imprints of childhood and youth are strong and permanent. They do not diminish with age but instead strengthen as the rashness of youth is replaced by the reluctance of maturity. The crossing of a border between two cultures is not a one-time occurrence, but persists in a suspension of time.
