Un Rêve

Two years ago as I was entering a store, I was overcome by a sense of perfect happiness. It took me a while to finally associate the smell of the store with the smell of my mother’s bedroom that I used to enter early morning, as a child. I realize that re-experiencing one’s personal past sometimes depends on chance encounters with objects that contain the keys to unlocking memories that might otherwise be hidden forever.

My recognition that involuntary recollections are fleeting, lasting only several seconds and depends on rare confrontations with particular smells or sights, led me to start focusing on my past.

The experience of remembering a past episode, I realized, is not based merely on calling to mind a stored memory image, instead a feeling of remembering emerges from comparison of 2 images, one in the present one in the past. And so for the last 2 years I have attempted to recapture old memories by preserving them in paint.
